Signs of Rotten Dates to Look Out for Before Buying

by | Mar 7, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Dates, the sweet and nutrient-rich fruit, are always a favorite, especially during Ramadan. But did you know that not all dates that look good in the market are still safe to eat? Rotten dates not only ruin the eating experience but can also pose health risks. That’s why it’s important to know how to tell fresh dates apart from those that are no longer safe to consume. To make sure you don’t buy the wrong ones, let’s check out the signs of rotten dates based on texture, color, aroma, and taste!

Texture

Fresh dates typically have a chewy and slightly sticky texture. Rotten dates, however, undergo significant texture changes. Here are some signs to watch out for:

1. Soft and Mushy

Rotten dates will feel very soft to the touch and may even crumble when gently pressed.

2. Slimy or Watery

The presence of slime or watery liquid on the surface of the dates is a strong indication of spoilage. This can be caused by bacterial or fungal growth.

3. Abnormally Dry and Hard

Although some types of dates are naturally dry, rotten dry dates will feel overly hard and brittle, unlike normal dry textures.

Color

Changes in color are also key indicators when identifying rotten dates. Pay attention to the following:

1. Darkened or Blackened Color

Rotten dates will become darker than their original color, sometimes even turning black in certain areas.

2. White or Gray Spots (Mold Growth)

White or gray spots, especially those with a cotton-like texture, are signs of mold growth and indicate the dates are spoiled.

3. Unnaturally Faded Color

Rotten dates may also appear faded and dull, lacking their usual fresh appearance.

Aroma

Fresh dates usually have a sweet, slightly caramel-like aroma. Rotten dates, on the other hand, will give off an unpleasant smell. Some warning signs include:

1. Sour or Rancid Smell

A sour or rancid odor suggests an undesirable fermentation process and indicates that the dates are no longer safe to eat.

2. Alcohol or Fermented Smell

An alcoholic or fermented smell is a sign of microbial activity leading to spoilage.

3. Musty or Off-Putting Odor

In general, any musty or unpleasant odor different from fresh dates is a strong indication that they are rotten.

Taste

Although it is not recommended to taste dates that seem suspicious, taste can sometimes be the final indicator. Some flavors to watch out for include:

1. Sour or Bitter Taste

A strong sour or bitter taste signals that the dates have gone bad.

2. Not as Sweet as Usual

Fresh dates have a distinct natural sweetness. If the sweetness has faded or disappeared, the dates may be spoiled.

3. Alcoholic or Fermented Taste

Just like the aroma, an alcoholic or fermented taste suggests microbial activity leading to spoilage.
