by | Mar 18, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Opor ayam is always a favorite at every special moment—from big celebrations to family gatherings. But have you ever cooked too much, only to have your opor ayam go bad all of a sudden? When that happens, there’s really no choice but to toss it. Such a waste, right? So for those planning to make opor ayam for Lebaran, here’s Minchef spilling the beans on how to properly store your opor ayam so it stays fresh and lasts longer. Hopefully, with these tips, you can serve up your proud opor ayam without any worries about spoilage!

How to Store Your Opor Ayam So It Doesn’t Go Bad and Lasts Longer

To keep your opor ayam fresh, here’s how to store it so it doesn’t spoil and lasts longer:

1. Use an Airtight Container

An airtight container is very important to prevent bacterial contamination from outside air and to keep the flavor of your opor ayam at its best. Make sure the container is sealed tight with no gaps for air to sneak in.

2. Choose Glass or Food-Grade Plastic Containers

Glass or food-grade plastic containers are safe for storing food and won’t react with your opor ayam. Avoid using metal containers because they can affect the taste and aroma of your dish.

3. Make Sure the Container is Clean and Dry

Before using, wash your container thoroughly with soap and hot water, then dry it completely. A damp container can speed up bacterial growth and cause your opor ayam to spoil quickly.

4. Cool Your Opor Ayam to Room Temperature

Don’t immediately put hot opor ayam into the fridge. Let it cool to room temperature first to prevent drastic temperature changes inside the fridge and avoid condensation forming on the container.

5. Store Opor Ayam in Small Portions

Dividing your opor ayam into several small containers speeds up the cooling process and ensures the cold temperature reaches every part of the dish. It also makes it easier to take just the right portion when you want to reheat it.

6. Don’t Stack Opor Ayam Containers Too High in the Fridge

Good air circulation inside the fridge is very important. Don’t stack the containers too high so that the cold air can circulate freely and keep the temperature stable.

7. Divide Your Opor Ayam into Small Containers Before Freezing

Just like in the fridge, divide your opor ayam into small, single-serving containers before freezing. This makes thawing easier and prevents repeated reheating, which can damage the quality of your dish.

8. Remove as Much Air as Possible from the Container Before Sealing

Air in the container can cause freezer burn and affect the texture of your opor ayam. Gently press the opor ayam in the container to remove as much air as possible before sealing it tightly.

9. Label the Container with the Storage Date

Writing the storage date on the container makes it easier to monitor the age of your frozen opor ayam and ensures you eat it before it exceeds the recommended storage time (up to 3 months).

Tips for Safely Thawing Frozen Opor Ayam

After you’ve frozen your opor ayam, here are some tips for safely thawing it:

  • Thaw in the Fridge Overnight
Place your frozen opor ayam in the fridge overnight before reheating. This is the safest way to thaw it since the process is slow and even, preventing bacterial growth.
  • Avoid Thawing at Room Temperature:
Never thaw opor ayam at room temperature because it can quickly become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
  • Reheat Thoroughly:
Once thawed, heat your opor ayam until it boils evenly to ensure that any bacteria that might have grown are killed before consumption.
