How Long Should You Boil Potatoes? Here’s the Ideal Time for Perfect Results

by | Jul 25, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Potatoes are a popular ingredient because they’re practical, filling, and versatile enough for a wide range of delicious dishes. But even though boiling potatoes seems simple, there’s actually a bit of technique involved! One of the most important things to know is how long to boil potatoes until they’re perfectly cooked. If you boil potatoes for too long, they can become overly soft and fall apart. But if you take them out too early, the inside may still be hard and unpleasant to eat. So to avoid confusion, let’s figure out the ideal boiling time for potatoes based on their type and how you plan to use them.

Factors That Affect How Long to Boil Potatoes

The time needed to boil potatoes isn’t always the same, it depends on several factors. Here are a few key things that influence how long it takes to boil them:

1. Size of the Potatoes

The larger the potato, the longer it takes to cook all the way through. If you’re boiling whole, large potatoes, be sure to allow extra time so the center gets fully cooked.

2. Type of Potato

Not all potatoes behave the same. High-moisture potatoes like red potatoes tend to cook faster, while starchy potatoes like Russet need more time to soften.

3. How You Cut the Potatoes

If you want to save time, cut the potatoes into smaller pieces. Diced or sliced potatoes cook faster than whole ones and are great for soups or potato salads.

4. Amount of Water

Make sure the potatoes are fully submerged in water. If any part is left above the water, it may not cook evenly, some pieces might be soft, while others stay firm.

Boiling Time Based on How the Potatoes Are Cut

How you cut the potatoes will also affect the cooking time. Here’s a quick guide:

1. Whole Potatoes (Unpeeled)

If you’re boiling whole, unpeeled potatoes, it usually takes around 20–30 minutes. This method works well for mashed potatoes or whole boiled potatoes served as a side.

Tip: Choose potatoes of similar size for even cooking. To check doneness, insert a fork into the center, if it goes in easily, they’re ready.

2. Peeled and Diced Potatoes

Peeled and cubed potatoes take about 10–15 minutes to boil. This is a great option for potato salads or soups.

Tip: Small pieces cook quickly, so keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking and turning them too mushy.

3. Thinly Sliced Potatoes

For thin slices, often used in gratin or casseroles, boiling takes just 5–10 minutes, or you can steam them briefly to keep the texture firm.

Tips for Perfectly Boiled Potatoes

Knowing how long to boil potatoes is important, but technique matters too! Follow these tips to get soft, flavorful potatoes without losing too many nutrients:

  • Start with cold water. Don’t place potatoes directly into boiling water, this cooks the outside faster than the inside.
  • Add salt to the water. This enhances the potato’s natural flavor.
  • Partially cover the pot. Steam helps speed up cooking without boiling over.
  • Avoid stirring too often. This can cause the potatoes to break apart, especially once they’re soft.

How to Know When Potatoes Are Done

Perfectly cooked potatoes should feel soft when pierced with a fork. If the fork goes in easily with no resistance, it’s time to remove them from the water. Avoid overboiling, as the potatoes will absorb too much water and become mushy.
