1. Pay Attention to the Skin Color 

Sweet and ripe snake fruit usually has reddish-brown to dark brown skin, sometimes with a hint of deep purple. Even coloration indicates consistent ripeness. Avoid snake fruit with pale, yellowish skin or white patches, as it may be underripe or even spoiled. Extremely dark skin can also be a warning sign that the fruit is overripe. 

2. Check the Skin Texture 

Sweet snake fruit typically has dry and slightly rough skin, with visible, slightly separated scales. This rough texture is a good indicator that the fruit is optimally ripe. If the skin feels too moist, watery, or slippery, the fruit may be underripe, overripe, or beginning to spoil. 

3. Observe the Shape and Size 

Choose snake fruit that is slightly round and firm, with a gently pointed tip. Fruit that is too elongated or flat may have less flesh and more hollow space inside. Size can also hint at ripeness, snake fruit smaller than 4 cm in diameter is usually not fully ripe. On the other hand, very large ones may not always be sweet, as they could be overripe and watery. 

4. Smell the Aroma 

Ripe and sweet snake fruit gives off a pleasant, distinctive aroma, sweet with a slightly tangy scent. This fragrance becomes even stronger when the fruit is opened. Avoid snake fruit with a strong sour, fermented, or rancid smell, as it may already be spoiled or overly ripe.

Ripe snake fruit usually feels slightly soft when pressed with a finger, but not mushy. If it’s too hard, it’s likely not ripe yet. If it’s too soft, it could be overripe, spoiled, or even infested inside.
