How to Store Ketupat to Keep It from Going Bad

by | Mar 26, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Since it’s one of the main dishes, it’s no surprise that people make ketupat in large batches. But the downside? If not stored properly, ketupat can spoil quickly, turn slimy, or even start to smell bad. Such a waste, right? That means no more enjoying this classic Eid dish!

But don’t worry—there are ways to keep your ketupat fresh and tasty for longer! In this article, we’ll spill all the best ketupat storage hacks, from quick short-term methods to long-term storage tricks. So, say goodbye to wasted ketupat and hello to delicious leftovers!

What Is Ketupat and Why It Needs Proper Storage

Ketupat is a classic dish made from rice wrapped in woven coconut leaves, and it’s always the star of the show on Eid. For many Indonesians, ketupat is the go-to carb substitute for rice during the holiday celebrations.

The problem? Ketupat doesn’t have a long shelf life, especially if left at room temperature for too long. And trust me, no one wants to deal with slimy, mushy ketupat! That’s why knowing the right storage methods is a must—to keep it fresh, tasty, and ready to enjoy for days!

Choosing the Right Ketupat

When purchasing ketupat, you can choose between fresh or vacuum-packed ketupat. Fresh ketupat is commonly found in markets and has a shorter shelf life. Look for ketupat that is firm, evenly colored, and free from damage or discoloration. Vacuum-packed ketupat lasts longer and is more convenient. Ensure the packaging is intact, without any punctures or tears, and check the expiration date.

How to Store Ketupat to Keep It Fresh for a Short Time (1-3 Days)

If you plan to enjoy ketupat within 1 to 3 days, here’s how to keep it from spoiling:

1. Boil the ketupat properly

Make sure to cook it thoroughly for about 4-5 hours so the rice inside is fully cooked. Well-cooked ketupat lasts longer.

2. Drain and let it dry completely

After boiling, hang the ketupat in a shady, well-ventilated place to allow excess water to drip off and dry completely. This step is crucial to prevent bacteria and mold growth.

3. Store in an airtight container at room temperature

Once dry, keep ketupat in an airtight container to protect it from contamination and excess moisture. Hanging ketupat in a dry, cool place can also help maintain its freshness for a few days.

How to Store Ketupat for a Longer Time (3-7 Days)

If you want to keep ketupat fresh for 3 to 7 days, follow these steps:

1. Boil the ketupat until fully cooked

Just like the previous method, ensure it’s cooked thoroughly.

2. Drain and cool completely

After boiling, let ketupat cool down completely before storing it in the fridge. Never put hot ketupat in the fridge, as condensation can speed up spoilage.

3. Store in an airtight container in the fridge

Once cooled, place the ketupat in an airtight container and refrigerate. Before serving, take ketupat out of the fridge about 30 minutes in advance and steam it to restore its chewy and warm texture.

How to Store Ketupat for a Very Long Time (More than 7 Days)

To store ketupat for more than 7 days, follow this method:

1. Boil the ketupat until fully cooked

Ensure it’s cooked thoroughly.

2. Drain and let it cool

Once done, let the ketupat cool down completely before freezing.

3. Store in an airtight container in the freezer

After cooling, place ketupat in an airtight container or freezer bag before freezing. To serve, thaw the frozen ketupat at room temperature or in the fridge before steaming it again.
