6 Causes of Constipation in Kids that Mothers Should Be Aware of!

by | Jul 18, 2024 | ARTICLE, ARTIKEL, Update

Many factors lead to constipation in children. This digestive issue can indeed happen to anyone, including toddlers and even infants.

Aside from causing an uncomfortable tummy, constipation can also be dangerous if not taken care of immediately. In the long term, this condition can lead to more serious health problems. Like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer.

6 causes of constipation, the last one is the main factor!

To avoid or relieve constipation in children, every mom should be aware of the causes. This is important, their loved ones shouldn’t have to feel the discomfort from constipation or have their daily activities interrupted.

1. Dehydration

Liquid is important for the digestive system. It increases moisture in stool, making it softer and easier to move along the digestive tract. That way, it’s easier for children to poop.

Make sure your kids take enough liquid to stay hydrated. But avoid sugary drinks. Just plain water is enough. You can keep water in cute tumblers to make your kids think that drinking water is a fun activity.

2. Certain health issues

Constipation can sometimes happen in relation to their health conditions. Some illnesses like hypothyroid, intestinal obstruction, and irritable bowel syndrome are some of the factors that lead to constipation.

3. Medication or supplementation

Some drugs with constipation as a side effect include antihistamine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Antihistamine is typically used to treat allergies and colds. Meanwhile, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used to treat colds, relieve pain, and reduce inflammation.

4. Ignore the urge to go to the toilet

The longer your kids ignore the urge to poop, the longer the stool stays in their intestines and the harder it is to get out of the body. So, remind your kids to go to the toilet immediately whenever they feel the need to. No matter how busy they are playing.

You can also set a regular schedule for your kids to poop. Ensure they go to the toilet around the same time every day. This way, it’s easier for the kids to identify whether they need to go pooping. It’s easier for you too to see if there’s a change in your kids’ pooping habits and identify what’s wrong with them.

5. Lactose intolerance

Dairy consumption can also cause constipation, especially in kids with lactose intolerance.

To those unfamiliar with the term, lactose intolerance happens when the body doesn’t produce enough enzyme called lactase that turns down lactose in dairy products into energy. This condition can happen to anyone, including children.

Lactose doesn’t only exist in dairy milk, but also in its derivatives like cheese, yogurt, cooking cream, and butter. So, be careful if your kids are lactose intolerant. Always read thoroughly the complete ingredients and nutrition facts of every product.

6. Lack of fiber

Lack of fiber is one of the most common causes of constipation in kids.

Fiber is very important for bowel movement, as it increases the mass of stool and softens it so it can pass through the digestive tract more easily.

Unfortunately, lack of fiber consumption is still a big problem in many parts of the world, mostly due to reluctance to eat fiber sources like fruits, vegetables, seeds, and grains. It doesn’t only happen to adults, but also children.

Depending on their ages, children need 10-30 grams of fiber per day. Aside from vegetables, fruits, seeds, and grains, they can increase their fiber intake with FiberCreme, a versatile ingredient with high fiber and creamy taste. As an alternative to dairy and coconut milk, this product goes well with your kids’ favorite food and drink. This means, they can get extra fiber from simply licking their favorite ice cream or enjoying comfortable food like creamy soups. Are your kids unable to eat or drink creamy stuff due to lactose intolerance? No worries, because FiberCreme contains no lactose.
