How to Boil Bay Leaves for Maximum Benefits

by | Nov 6, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Bay leaves have long been known as a kitchen spice that gives a distinctive aroma to Indonesian dishes. Almost every soupy dish, such as sop, soto, curry, or sayur lodeh, often includes bay leaves as a natural flavor enhancer. But aside from being a seasoning, bay leaves can also be boiled to provide a range of health benefits.

So, what is the proper way to boil bay leaves so that their properties are preserved? Many people simply throw bay leaves into hot water, when in fact there are a few steps worth paying attention to if you want to get the most out of them.

Health Benefits of Bay Leaves

Before learning how to boil them, let’s take a closer look at the benefits of bay leaves. This plant contains various active compounds such as antioxidants, tannins, and essential oils. These components are believed to help:

  • Lower blood sugar levels and support metabolism.
  • Reduce bad cholesterol, making it good for heart health.
  • Improve digestion, especially for those who often experience bloating or constipation.
  • Lower blood pressure thanks to its natural relaxing effect.
  • Relieve mild stress through its distinctive, soothing aroma.

No wonder bay leaf tea is often used as a simple homemade herbal drink.

Tips for Choosing Quality Bay Leaves

To get the best results, choose fresh bay leaves or naturally dried ones. Fresh bay leaves are usually dark green, firm, and fragrant. If you prefer dried bay leaves for longer storage, keep them in a tightly sealed container to preserve their aroma.

How to Boil Bay Leaves

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making a tasty and beneficial bay leaf drink at home:

1. Prepare the main ingredient

Take about 5–10 bay leaves, either fresh or dried. For the best aroma, use fresh ones. Rinse thoroughly under running water to remove any dust or dirt.

2. Measure enough water

Place the bay leaves into a small pot with about 500 ml of water (around two medium glasses). You can adjust the amount of water depending on how strong you want the flavor and aroma to be.

3. Start boiling over low heat

Turn on the stove and let the bay leaves simmer gently over low to medium heat. This allows the active compounds to infuse properly. Avoid high heat, as the water may evaporate too quickly before the leaves release their essence.

4. Add optional ingredients

For extra flavor, you may add a slice of ginger, a stalk of lemongrass, or a small piece of cinnamon. These additions will give the drink a warmer taste while enhancing its health benefits.

5. Boil long enough

Let the mixture boil for 10–15 minutes. By then, the water will usually turn slightly brownish with a fragrant bay leaf aroma. The longer you boil, the stronger the taste will be.

6. Strain before serving

Turn off the heat and let it cool slightly. Strain the liquid using a tea strainer or fine cloth so no leaf fragments end up in your drink.

7. Serve to your liking

Pour into a glass and enjoy it warm for a soothing effect, or let it cool and add ice cubes for a refreshing herbal drink. If you prefer a little sweetness, use honey or a low-calorie sweetener.

This way, your bay leaf drink will not only retain its health benefits but also taste better.

Things to Keep in Mind

Even though bay leaf water is beneficial, it shouldn’t be consumed excessively. One glass a day is enough to support your health. If you have certain medical conditions or are taking prescribed medications, it’s best to consult your doctor before drinking it regularly.

Variations of Bay Leaf Drinks

Besides drinking it as is, bay leaf water can also be used as a base for soups or spiced herbal drinks. It has a light taste, a distinct aroma, and works perfectly as a warm evening beverage. And the good part is, you can always elevate the flavor of the herbal drinks of your choice with FiberCreme.
