Here Are Why Ice Cubes Take Longer to Freeze

by | May 22, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

You’ve already prepared your favorite cold drink, but the ice cubes just won’t freeze? They’ve been in the freezer for a while, yet they’re still not solid. Hmm… chances are, you’re not aware of some causes why ice cubes take longer to freeze that often happen without us realizing it.

Don’t worry, in this article we’ll break down what those causes are and how to speed up the ice-making process. Let’s find out so you won’t have to wait too long!

Why Do Ice Cubes Take Longer to Freeze?

The freezing process of ice cubes happens when the heat from the water transfers to the colder environment of the freezer. However, there are several factors that can slow down this process and make ice cubes take longer to freeze. These include an insufficiently cold freezer temperature, poor air circulation, the type of container used, and even the quality of the water.

1. The Freezer Isn’t Cold Enough

The ideal temperature for a freezer is -18°C or 0°F. A higher temperature than this will extend the time it takes for ice cubes to freeze. Be sure to check your freezer’s temperature settings and adjust them if necessary. Some freezers also have a “fast freeze” feature that you can use to speed up the freezing process.

2. An Overcrowded Freezer

A freezer that’s too full can block cold air circulation. Poor air circulation leads to uneven temperature distribution inside the freezer, so certain areas, including where the ice tray is placed, may not be as cold as needed. Reorganize your freezer to ensure there’s enough space for proper airflow.

3. Frequently Opening and Closing the Freezer Door

Every time the freezer door is opened, warm air from outside enters the freezer. This causes the internal temperature to rise and slows down the freezing process. Try to open the freezer door as little as possible and close it quickly afterward.

4. Type and Material of the Ice Tray

The material of your ice tray matters, for example metal trays conduct cold faster than plastic ones. Besides the material, the shape and size of the tray also play a role. Ice trays with a wider surface area freeze more quickly than deep and narrow ones. Choose ice trays made from cold-conducting materials like stainless steel or silicone.

5. The Quality of Water Used

Although it might seem trivial, the quality of the water can also affect how long it takes to freeze. Water with high mineral content or water that hasn’t been properly filtered may take longer to freeze compared to purified water. Using pre-boiled and cooled water can help speed up the freezing process.
