Here Are 5 Types of Spices You Should Not Store in the Fridge

by | Nov 21, 2024 | ARTIKEL, Update

As essential ingredients in cooking, spices need to be kept in good condition. That’s why proper storage is important. Although many believe that storing spices in the fridge keeps them fresh, that’s not entirely true! Some should not be stored in the fridge, as the cold can actually accelerate their spoilage.

To keep your ingredients fresh, let’s find out here which ones should not be stored in the fridge! Here are 5 types of spices that should not be stored in the refrigerator :

1. Onions

Garlic, shallots, and onions are common in most kitchens, but they’re not meant for the fridge. Cold temperatures can cause them to sprout quickly, soften, and lose their flavor. The best way to store garlic is in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Onions should be kept in an open container or one with ventilation holes. Good airflow helps prevent excess moisture from spoiling them.

2. Ground Pepper

Neither black nor white pepper should be stored in the fridge. The moisture in the fridge can reduce pepper’s aromatic potency. If ground, high humidity can also cause it to clump together.

For best results, store pepper in an airtight container in a dry place away from sunlight. The same goes for other dried spices, like coriander, cumin, and nutmeg.

3. Basil

Basil easily absorbs odors from other items in the fridge, which causes it to lose its distinct flavor instead of enhancing dishes. This also applies to other herbs, like green onions, cilantro, and parsley.

To store herbs like these, place them at room temperature by submerging their stems in a glass of water. Keep them in a spot with indirect sunlight to maintain their freshness longer.

4. Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon sticks are also better stored outside the fridge. Cold temperatures don’t help preserve cinnamon’s quality and can make it lose its distinct aroma. Store cinnamon in an airtight container at room temperature to keep its fragrance strong.

5. Cloves

Dried cloves can last a long time at room temperature as long as they’re kept in a tightly sealed container to maintain their aroma. Avoid exposure to sunlight and moisture. Storing cloves in the fridge can increase the risk of mold, which can spoil the cloves.

But what about FiberCreme—should it be stored in the fridge or not?

Now you know which spices should not be stored in the fridge! Because having fresh, high-quality ingredients is essential for making delicious dishes.

Besides the seasonings mentioned above, there’s one more essential ingredient for daily cooking. Yes, FiberCreme, which makes dishes creamy and delicious, plus adds fiber to make your homemade meals even healthier.

So, how should you store FiberCreme? Does it need to be refrigerated?

FiberCreme can be stored in its original bottle or aluminum bag at room temperature or in the fridge! Want to transfer it to your own container? No problem! Just make sure the container is dry, tightly sealed, and kept away from direct sunlight.

FiberCreme should also be kept in a dry place and away from items with strong odors, as it contains fiber that is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture and nearby odors.

If you find your FiberCreme clumping, don’t worry! As long as it hasn’t gone past its expiry date, clumpy FiberCreme is still safe to use. Just dissolve it in hot water before adding it to any food or drink you want to make tastier and healthier.

Easy, right? You can find FiberCreme in nearby stores and supermarkets, or buy it online here! If you already have FiberCreme but aren’t sure what to make, check out tasty recipe ideas on @FiberCreme_TV and the Ellenka channel on YouTube.
