The pain, dizziness, and cramps that we know as symptoms of cholesterol only appear when plaque in the blood vessels has already started to build up.

In general, a person should get their cholesterol checked once every 5 years once they turn 20. If the cholesterol level exceeds 200 mg/dL, do a cholesterol check every 3 months until the level is back to normal. Who should have their cholesterol checked?
Cholesterol checks should not only be done by adults or the elderly. According to the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, even children and teenagers should have their cholesterol checked.
Children aged 9-11 years should have their cholesterol checked at least once. The same goes for teenagers aged 17-21. They may need to do a more regular cholesterol check if they’re:
- Obese and diabetic
- Are at risk of heart disease or diabetes
- Have a family history of high cholesterol
