Don’t Panic Yet, Try These Ways to Remove Fish Bones Stuck in Your Throat

by | Jan 7, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Fish is an excellent source of protein, especially for children. Regular consumption of fish can support their growth, boost immunity, and provide essential nutrients such as omega-3. However, unexpected issues may arise, especially for kids unfamiliar with eating fish. One common problem is accidentally swallowing a fish bone.

Has this ever happened to your kids or maybe to you? Let’s dive into this article to find out how to safely remove fish bones stuck in your throat. This way, there’s no reason to fear eating fish!

Why Are Fish Bones a Problem?

Accidentally swallowing a fish bone can be quite uncomfortable or even traumatic, especially for children just learning to eat fish. Fish bones stuck in the throat can cause a sensation of something lodged in there. This discomfort can disrupt daily activities like eating and speaking. In some cases, the fish bone may also cause irritation or mild pain.

But don’t worry! There are several safe and easy methods to remove fish bones stuck in your throat.

Safe Ways to Remove Fish Bones from Your Throat

1. Swallow Rice

Take a spoonful of warm, sticky rice, shape it into a small ball, and swallow it whole. The rice can catch small fish bones in the throat and help push them down to the digestive tract.

2. Eat Soft, Dense Foods

Soft but dense foods like bread or bananas can help dislodge the fish bone. Cut them into small pieces and swallow them without chewing too much so the food can push the bone downward.

3. Cough Naturally

If the fish bone is small and still near the top of your throat, try coughing strongly. The force from coughing might dislodge the bone without needing further steps.

4. Drink Acidic Beverages

Acidic drinks like diluted vinegar or lemon juice can help dissolve small and thin fish bones. Add one or two tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice to a glass of warm water and drink slowly. The acidity may soften the bone, making it easier to swallow.

5. Gargle with Salt Water

Gargling with warm salt water can help ease discomfort caused by the fish bone and reduce irritation in the throat. Mix one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water, then gargle for several seconds.

6. See a Doctor if the Bone Won’t Dislodge

If none of the above methods work or the bone causes pain, consult a doctor immediately. Doctors can use specialized tools to safely remove the fish bone without causing further injury.
