Discover the Differences Between Crabs and Swimming Crabs: Different Species, Different Flavors

by | Feb 8, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Crabs and swimming crabs are different? Yes, both are shelled creatures with claws and are edible. No wonder many people assume they’re the same. Despite all the similarities mentioned above, crabs and swimming crabs have several distinct differences! So, to avoid buying the wrong one, let’s dive into this article! Here, Minchef will thoroughly explain the differences between crabs and swimming crabs. Plus, there are tips to make your crab or swimming crab dishes even tastier!

Differences Between Crabs and Swimming Crab

The differences between crabs and swimming crabs aren’t just about their appearance. Their taste and texture are also different. Here’s a more detailed explanation about the differences between crabs and swimming crabs:

1. Habitat

Crabs are typically found in various habitats, ranging from sandy beaches, rocky areas, to mangrove forests. They love digging holes in the sand or hiding among rocks. On the other hand, swimming crabs prefer habitats on muddy or sandy seabeds, sometimes in areas with seagrass or marine plants.

2. Body Shape Differences

Crabs have a wide body shape. With their broad body, crabs are very stable when walking on sand or rocks. Their hard and wide carapace also provides optimal protection from predators.

Meanwhile, swimming crabs have a slim and elongated body shape, making them more agile and quick. This body shape allows them to move swiftly on muddy seabeds and sneak through narrow gaps. These physical differences significantly influence how they move and adapt to their respective habitats.

3. Movement Style

Crabs are known for their sideways walking style, which often looks funny and adorable. This is due to the structure of their legs and joints. Swimming crabs, however, are much more agile and can move forward, backward, and sideways. Additionally, swimming crabs are excellent swimmers, using their paddle-like back legs to swim rapidly.

4. Shell

Both crabs and swimming crabs have hard shells or exoskeletons made of chitin that protect their bodies. However, you might occasionally find soft-shell crabs. These are crabs in the process of molting. During this phase, their shells haven’t hardened yet, making their entire body edible and a favorite delicacy for many.

5. Taste and Texture

Both crabs and swimming crabs are delicious, but they have subtle differences in taste and texture. Crab meat tends to be denser, sweeter, and slightly richer in flavor. Meanwhile, swimming crab meat is more fibrous, savory, and has a lighter taste.
