How to Tell When Squid Has Gone Bad

4. Cloudy or Pale Eyes

If you buy squid with its head intact, check its eyes. Fresh squid eyes should be clear and slightly glossy. If the eyes look cloudy, murky, or even absent, it’s a clear indication that the squid is already deteriorating. Healthy squid eyes should be round and shiny, signaling its freshness. 

5. Dry and Hard to Cut

When cooking, fresh squid should be easy to cut and cook perfectly. If the squid feels very tough and hard to slice even after cooking, it’s probably past its prime. Dry and hard squid meat suggests that it has lost moisture, which happens during the spoiling process.
