How to Tell When Squid Has Gone Bad

by | Jan 9, 2025 | ARTIKEL, Update

Do you love eating squid? This seafood is certainly a favorite for many, thanks to its savory taste, chewy texture, and versatility in cooking. Whether in sambal squid, crispy fried squid, or seafood fried rice, squid can elevate any dish. However, because squid is very perishable, it’s important to know if your squid is still fresh or not to avoid consuming seafood that’s no longer safe to eat.

Look Out for These Signs Showing that Squid Has Gone Bad

Squid that is no longer fresh not only ruins the flavor of your dishes, but like other perishable foods, it can also become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Eating spoiled squid can lead to food poisoning.

To prevent this from happening, watch out for these signs:

1. Unpleasant Smell

One of the quickest ways to tell if squid is still fresh is by smelling it. Fresh squid will have a slightly sweet, ocean-like scent. If you notice a fishy or rotten odor, it’s safe to say the squid is no longer good for consumption. This smell indicates that the squid has been contaminated with bacteria or microorganisms that are causing it to spoil.

2. Too Soft or Slimy Texture

Fresh squid should have a firm and slightly elastic texture when pressed. If it feels overly soft or slimy, it’s a sign that the squid is starting to rot. A lack of firmness and sliminess shows that the squid’s flesh has lost its quality.

3. Abnormal Color

Fresh squid typically has a bright color, ranging from clear white to a slight reddish hue on the body and tentacles. If the squid appears dull, brownish, or even greenish, it could be a sign that it’s no longer fresh. Spoiled squid often loses its natural color and may appear pale or streaky.

4. Cloudy or Pale Eyes

If you buy squid with its head intact, check its eyes. Fresh squid eyes should be clear and slightly glossy. If the eyes look cloudy, murky, or even absent, it’s a clear indication that the squid is already deteriorating. Healthy squid eyes should be round and shiny, signaling its freshness.

5. Dry and Hard to Cut

When cooking, fresh squid should be easy to cut and cook perfectly. If the squid feels very tough and hard to slice even after cooking, it’s probably past its prime. Dry and hard squid meat suggests that it has lost moisture, which happens during the spoiling process.
