Let’s Meet Halal Wine from Aceh!
When you hear the word Aceh, what’s the first thing you think of?
As a special province with the nickname “the porch of Mecca”, you must imagine the atmosphere of a very Islamic area, right? And if you’ve been there, you’ll see that Islamic culture is still very strong there.
But really, there are wines that you can find in Aceh. It’s sold over the counter. And even more curious, the wine is allowed to be drunk by Muslims, aka halal. What kind of wine is that?
Unique coffee varieties from Aceh
Don’t worry, the wine in question is not made with grapes and alcohol as we know it. So in Aceh there is a coffee wine menu made from fermented coffee beans. The red coffee cherries will be put into sealed plastic bags and left for 30-60 days to allow the aroma and sweetness of the coffee cherries to permeate the seeds. After that process, the coffee cherries are dried in the sun and ground to remove the red skin. Only then is it roasted and processed into coffee drinks.
Is it a long process? So don’t be surprised if wine coffee is a favorite in its home region, and even became one of Kaesang’s favorites when he appeared with Kevin Hendrawan in the 7th episode of Segaris Expedition.
Since Aceh is also known for its coffee, it doesn’t feel right if you only try one type of coffee? That’s why in this episode you are also invited to see how to serve and drink kupi khop coffee upside down. As the name implies, this coffee is served in a glass in the best position.
Kupi khop comes from the Acehnese habit of drinking coffee and even bringing coffee with them when they go out to sea to fish. Now the function of serving this upside down glass is to keep the coffee warm longer.
And unlike normal coffee, kupi khop is made from whole coffee beans that are split into four and served in a glass which is then covered with a small plate base, and turned over. How to drink? Just sip the coffee that seeps out from between the glass and the base.
The Queen of Coffee, a luxury item in Europe
Speaking of Indonesian coffee, it’s incomplete if you haven’t tried Toraja’s specialty coffee which is no less delicious and famous. In fact, Toraja coffee is often called the queen of coffee, and is a luxury item for people in Northern European countries.
In its place of origin, after harvesting the coffee beans will be processed manually. Even the pounding process is still traditional, using a pestle and mortar. For those of you who have never tried it for yourself, Toraja coffee has a strong and rich flavor, but very low acidity.
Indonesian Coffee that Goes Global
Apart from Aceh and Toraja, Indonesia also has coffee types that are no less famous from various regions. Call it Balinese coffee, which is Arabica and mostly grown in the Kintamani area. Then there is Flores coffee, which is quite strong but has chocolate and vanilla flavors with a nutty aftertaste.
Indonesia is doing great. Just one country can grow dozens of types of coffee that have their own characteristics. Some are even exported to developed countries and become super expensive commodities.
So let’s learn from coffee, which can make us proud of its diversity. It grows from the east to the west of Indonesia, in the highlands and lowlands, and is processed in various ways to create different flavors that are still loved and sought after. #diversityisbeautiful, and differences are also what makes Indonesia a rich country.
